How to Plan Your Prom Makeup Look
Start with the Dress
Don’t start planning your prom makeup look until you’ve picked out your dress. The color and style of your dress will help you decide how to apply your makeup. Don’t worry – we’ll share some ideas on how to match your prom makeup to your dress later in this article.
Are you planning on doing any pre-prom beauty treatments like waxing, tweezing, facials, etc.? Make sure to schedule all those treatments as soon as you can, since salons tend to fill up quickly during prom season.
And while these treatments can help you to feel your best on your big night, they can also leave your skin red and inflamed. So make sure you don’t schedule any appointments in the three days leading up to prom to give your skin time to heal.
Once you have the dress, it’s time to start collecting inspiration. However, the endless options for prom makeup can be a little overwhelming. That’s we suggest making a mood board. But don’t worry, you don’t need to cut up a magazine or anything like that (though you’re certainly welcome to!). You can also organize your prom makeup inspiration digitally through Pinterest or on Instagram using the bookmarks feature.
Practice Applying False Eyelashes
If you’ve never applied false eyelashes before, prom night is not the best time to try them for the first time. Applying false eyelashes is easy, but it can take a couple of tries to get it right. Not sure where to start? Read our guide to choosing false eyelashes for your eye shape.
Do a Test Run
Professional makeup artists always do a makeup test before a big event, like a wedding. Makeup tests help you to figure out whether you like the look you’ve planned, and if your products work well together. This step is especially important if you’re using products you don’t normally wear, like primer or false eyelashes.
Plan to do your makeup test at least one day in advance. And make sure to take photos! Sometimes our makeup will look completely different in the mirror than in a selfie. You want to make sure your prom makeup looks good no matter what!
8 Ways to Make Your Prom Makeup Last All Night
You’ve purchased your dress, collected inspiration, and chosen your look. Now how do you make sure your makeup actually lasts? Keep reading to learn the secrets that real professional makeup artists use for long lasting makeup.
1. Start with a Smooth Canvas
Before you do your makeup, you’ll want to start by washing and lightly exfoliating your skin. This removes any dead, dull skin that can leave your makeup application looking patchy. Then apply moisturizer and let that sink in for 15 minutes before applying any makeup. This will allow the moisturizer to properly absorb into your skin for a more flawless finish.
2. Don’t Skip Primer
Primer might seem like an unnecessary step, but it’s definitely one you don’t want skip when you’re doing your prom makeup. Primer seals in moisture, helps your makeup blend more easily, and hides pores to give you skin an airbrushed finish. Most importantly, primer gives your makeup something to cling to so that it lasts longer.
Choose an oil-free, silicone-based primer for your prom makeup. Don’t forget to prime around your eyes to keep your prom eye makeup from smudging!
3. Set Your Foundation
The key to long-lasting foundation? Setting powder. After applying foundation, gently press a translucent powder onto your skin using a clean tapered brush or makeup sponge. Let sit for 5 minutes, then gently remove excess product using a soft powder brush.
4. Opt for Long-Lasting Lip Color
Prom night is the perfect night to choose a long-lasting lipstick formula. You don’t want to worry about having smeared lipstick in photos or running to the bathroom all night to touch up your lipstick!
While there’s plenty of long-lasting lipsticks out there (we recommend liquid lipsticks), you can also extend the life of any lip color with this easy trick:
- First, apply a thin layer of foundation to your lips.
- Next, line your lips in a lip pencil that matches your lipstick. Then fill in your lips with the lip pencil.
- Apply your lipstick and blot with a tissue.
As your lipstick wears away, the lip pencil will remain. This will significantly cut down on touch-ups!
5. Try Setting Spray
Makeup setting spray is another one of those tricks of the trade that can really extend the life of your prom makeup.
After finishing your makeup, mist your entire face with makeup setting spray. Make sure to pack your setting spray in your clutch to refresh your makeup throughout the night.
6. Don’t Skip Your Body
Makeup isn’t just for your face! Prom is also the perfect time to dabble in body makeup.
You don’t need to buy anything special for this step. Just apply lotion to your arms, chest, and legs, then dust with a subtle highlighter or shimmering bronzer.
7. Pack Reinforcements
Make sure you load up your bag with prom makeup essentials, including:
- Setting spray
- Oil blotting sheets
- Lash glue
8. Prep for Makeup Removal
It’s fun to experiment with makeup for a special occasion and maybe even wear a little (or a lot!) more than you’re used to. But don’t forget to remove that makeup at the end of the night! An oil cleanser works best to remove stubborn, longwear makeup.
At the very least, make sure you keep some makeup remover wipes next to your bed. That way, even if you’re too exhausted to do anything but get into bed at the end of the night, you’ll still be able to remove your makeup.
